I’ve been a fan of The Staves for a long time. Their 2015 release If I Was is one of my all-time favorite records. The Staves comprises three sisters (Emily, Jessica, and Camilla Staveley-Taylor). They’re known for their intricate harmonies, which weave together and climb in every song.
Now, The Staves have released a new track called “Nothing’s Gonna Happen.” It’s a stripped-down demo, written in a bedroom in East London and recorded in a studio in Wisconsin. “It’s been a while since we put new music out and we thought that seeing as this is the season of giving, we’d let one of these demos surface for anybody who is interested to hear,” says the band.
With The Stave’s harmonies and the finger-picked guitars, “Nothing’s Gonna Happen” is a soft, folk-y listen. It presents as a simple song, but it’s about questioning whether there is any place for you to go from where you are. “How can I rearrange and put it on the page?” starts the track. “When the enemy's at the door/ And there's nothing you can do they've never seen before.”
There’s no answer, but the sentiment is clear and true: “Nothing’s gonna happen with your back against the door.”
